Who is Kay O. Sweaver?

So who the hell is this guy who thinks he has such amazing insight into films and videos? Good question.

First and foremost I’m a filmmaker, so cinematic technique is a big deal to me. I spend more time thinking about lighting, sound effects and the arrangement of shots than your sister did picking out an outfit for the prom.

Secondly for the past five years I’ve worked as a film festival programmer for the Calgary International Film Festival and the $100 Film Festival. Watching thousands of hours of films submitted from all over the world hones your eyes and your ears so that you can spot a jewel in the rough and utter crap within seconds of the opening credits. It also means I have an understanding of what festivals and distributors are looking for.

Third is my education. I took extensive film studies courses at the University of Calgary in obtaining my Ba. English. I understand storytelling, visual culture, cinema history, etc.

Finally, I love movies. Rather I love good movies. Bad movies turn my stomach. Hollywood makes crap movies, they also make some gems. I don’t discriminate, that is until mind numbing dialogue starts coming out of the mouth of the latest starlet’s O-shaped mouth.
